Happy Birthday Geoff

Today is a very special day, it is Geoff's birthday! The hardest part is he is not here to celebrate it with his family. This is a strange and new situation with us and isn't very fun. He has received a few cards in the mail to open today and I left him a message, but he may not get it.

In past years, so much more planning and organizing (decorations, cupcakes, beer, food, and a party) went into this day as he always wanted to celebrate turning a year older in a big way! I am crossing my fingers that his birthday gets recognized, be it a rendition of "Happy Birthday To You" or be given a candle to blow out on a cake. The hardest part is I have no idea how it will be for him until we can talk. I'm trying to keep busy and plan to decorate the house for fall in the next few days to fill the void of absent balloons, streamers and signs. Its the only thing I can do!

Oh and one more thing.. I can also post his favourite group U2 covering the Stevie Wonder's version of "Happy Birthday."

We love you Geoff, our pride for you grows with each day. Stay strong and follow your dream..

A Duck Tale

Every day Hannah will ask me the same questions. I constantly get an earfull of "downtown?" or "see ducks?" or "see ducks and fish?" or the classic "go downtown see fish and ducks pwease?" If I don't hear that sometime during the day..? Well, that would never happen!

This is her favourite activity to do..go down to the lake to visit the boats, ducks and fish! Sometimes it is added on to a downtown grocery shop or errand, and sometimes it is the only plan of the day!

It was a busy day today, but because we were in the neighbourhood, we dropped in to see what the ducks were up to today. There are times they are sleeping, there are times they are up close to the beach..and then there are these times..

This duck acted more like an ostrich than a duck!! The breaks for air were far and few between..I couldn't get a photo fast enough of his rare oxygen intakes!

How did Hannah feel about this particular visit with the ducks today?

HILARIOUS!

Shoe Organizers In The Freezer

In my past life (as a makeup artist), makeovers made my day. Making someone feel like a million bucks and give them the tools and knowledge to give them a new look, was just a days work for me..and I loved every moment of it!

But now that time has fast forwarded to the present, and my life now needs to focus on this..

and these..

While our other family member is away..(is it December yet?!)

Today was a day of missing Geoff and my job all at once..so to be productive and keep me from being a boohoo pants, I thought..why not find something to makeover? It doesn't always have to involve makeup to be a makeover..

I opted to...

Clean out the fridge and freezer! I didn't take a "before" photo, you can thank me for sparing you from that atrocious sight. Just joking it wasn't that horrible, but I forgot to take one..

But the after photos are making me happy and proud to post!

A good tip is wait to clean out the fridge/freezer until your supplies are needing to be replenished, that way it makes the job a lot easier. Less emptying and refilling and lost counter space.

So much better, now I can see everything!

Okay, the door..I love organizing..so these little "nests" make it easy to categorize all the goodness. Lets start at the top! In the butter holder, I chose to put in containers of cheese. one nest contains burger/hot dog condiments, one nest contains the breakfast condiments (eg. syrup, jam and peanut butter), and the last nest contains salad dressing. The larger shelf holds juice, wine, jars, and sauce bottles, and the bottom one is (cough) ice cream topping sauces.

And for the big box..I actually battled with the top shelf after being scrubbed, to put it back into the original spot, but of course with my luck (and frustration) it wasn't happening. Not such a bad thing I realized once items started migrating back into the fridge. Its now a fraction higher than the original placement and works perfect for fragile items (such as eggs.) The drawer attached to the top shelf  keeps blocks of cheese in their own world. Take one step down see to the water filter system and Hannah's fridge snack corner with her juice boxes and yogurt in a tube (she also loves cheese sticks which would be next to the yogurt.)
The bottom shelf has milk, juice, butter and a bowl for defrosting the dogs food. I make weekly batches to  freeze of rice and veggies to top their crunchies - it helps make their bags of food last longer. I always stash a few for serving in the fridge. I missed taking photos of the two produce drawers, one is empty and the other one is home to a few beer bottles and soda..

There was nothing major to clean up in term of the fridge, but the shelves were removed and hauled to the bathtub for some scrubbing. I did come across a few casualties in terms of produce though.

Now, bring on the freezer!

This was the biggest project..funny concept since the freezer is smaller than the fridge but in terms of the before and after, it was the biggest transformation. Before it was a major avalanche waiting to happen, and since I am the only one home who can reach freezer height I sensed it needed to be done for my safety.

The door has the responsibility of frozen juice on the top, coffee beans and a loaf of bread (and two hidden kinder surprises) on the bottom. And now for the reveal..kind of wishing for the before picture now, but here we go..

Before, it looked nothing like this..there were no shoe organizers! It was a cheap transformation, and worth the dollar a pop for the "shoe organizers" to help categorize the frozen foods. The breakfast container (although looks empty) does hold english muffins and frozen berries and will eventually hold pancakes/waffles etc. The lunch container holds hot dogs and buns. The dinner container is exploding with home made tomato sauce, lasagna, moussaka and some seafood. The dog container holds Moxie and Daisy's food mixture. The big bag on the side are veggies for the dogs, will be gone soon and leave space for whole casseroles etc. Sadly, this clean out claimed a few more casualties than the fridge - freezer burnt meat (no loss for me being a vegetarian), and endless amounts of half or less than half loaves of bread stuffed to the back. Hopefully when hubby dearest returns, this system can continue. It has already become handy in terms of the future grocery shop..since the dinner container is full and lots of meal are already prepared, lets focus on the lesser full containers..No more wasted food crammed to the back and cleaning is time effecient now! It also, has turned into a saving grace for meal planning with it only being me and a busy two and a half year old.

Lets see how many of you can say you have shoe organizers in your freezer!

Poolside Daze

Even though the temperature takes a dip at night, the daytime requires another sort of dip to cool down...

Hannah is one brave soul, because the pool's source of water is from...

You got it, the hose! Its one serious job to fill the pool, but to me that job is a breeze compared to the blowing up and deflation of this monstrosity! Maybe next time, Hannah and I could switch jobs??

She just laughs at me, guess no trade? All the effort in the world (which this pool demands) is worth the sweat and tears when a moment comes along like this..

The first experimental head dunk!

In addition to the smiles that happen every time the pool is assembled, it is all priceless..

And as for the dogs, you ask? Well..

Moxie wonders why his yard happens to be invaded by an overload of inflatable toys on a regular basis, and none of them are for him..

And apart from taking a few drinks from the pool, Daisy she just wants to play with a towel!

And at the end of the day..after mom breathlessly inflates the pool and all the toys..Hannah (seriously) filling the pool with water.. splashing around and getting mom drenched..experiencing the glory and shock of the first head dunk..playing with the dogs so they don't feel left out of the fun..and getting wet grass between the toes..and being a tired two year old (and almost thirty year old)...the only thing to say is "pool outside again?"

Maybe tomorrow..

In The Sanctuary Of Outcasts

I just finished reading "In The Sanctuary Of Outcasts" by Neil White. A book full of heartbreak and humor. The memoir revolves around Neil White's and his journey of being incarcerated. After admitting to bank fraud, Neil White is in sent to a secluded Louisiana colony where 18 months await him. With time spent in a unified jail for convicts and a home for leprosy patients, Neil confronts his new life with bravery and charm. He learns life lessons, grows into a new version of himself and forms the most unlikely of friendships with a collection of characters you can't help but love. Two thumbs up for this jem of a book!

Serious Business

It has been one week since Geoff was humming to the tune.."All my bags are packed, I'm ready to go..." and leaving on his jet plane to start his career as Private (R) Keighley. With what I have understood, his time away will be serious and be plenty demanding. A day in the life being something like this:
